In a world where the gap between rich and poor continues to grow to disturbing levels, obesity has grown to become, one of the most serious medical conditions of the modern age.

Morbid obesity can result from a complex number of different factors, ranging from environmental and genetic factors to behavioural habits. Ultimately it occurs when there is a severe imbalance in an individual’s energy intake and their energy expenditure.

Approximately 127 million Americans are overweight; nine million of which suffer from morbid obesity. In 2005 more than 1.6 billion adults were overweight in the world with more than 400 million people been obese.

Morbid obesity is a recent global problem caused primarily by massive changes in the modern lifestyle.  The increased popularity of convenience foods, the introduction of labour-saving devices, the ubiquity of motorised transport and growth of sedentary jobs as created an obese world where people are getting fatter.

Morbid obesity is now a global health issue, where industry, business and governments have no choice but to pay attention to an ever deteriorating situation where the numbers of morbidly obese continue to grow.
